As autumn arrives, bringing a tapestry of vibrant colors and cooler temperatures, it’s a wonderful time to appreciate nature's beauty and spend quality moments with our loved ones. However, this season also presents unique safety challenges for seniors. To ensure that everyone can enjoy the fall festivities safely, consider the following tips:
1. Clear Pathways: Regularly rake leaves and remove debris from walkways to prevent slips and falls.
2. Proper Footwear: Encourage seniors to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes to navigate uneven surfaces easily.
3. Adequate Lighting: Ensure outdoor areas are well-lit as days grow shorter. Consider motion-activated lights for added safety.
4. Warm Clothing: As temperatures drop, ensure seniors dress in layers to stay warm while remaining mobile.
5. Check Home Safety: Inspect homes for potential hazards, like loose rugs or uneven floors, that could pose a risk.
6. Stay Active: Encourage gentle activities like walking or stretching to maintain balance and strength.
7. Emergency Preparedness: Make sure seniors have a way to call for help if needed, whether it's a phone or a personal emergency device.
8. Healthy Eating: Promote seasonal fruits and vegetables to support immune health during flu season.
By taking these precautions, we can ensure that our seniors enjoy the beauty of autumn safely. Let’s cherish this time together, creating warm memories while keeping health and safety a priority.

Xena care was with my husband for 2 years. I brought them in when my husband was in hospital from a stroke and deemed palliative. Bayfield was not able to provide the care and suggest I bring in private. I found Xena care, and they brought Jim back to himself. He was bedridden and had a catheter which he did not like, as well had Parkinson’s, and quite a few of health conditions. They understood he had tons of life left and to begin strength training. They started sitting him up, using the sit to stand to use the toilet then in bed. Over 2 weeks he was starting to use his walker and began walking all over again. He did the exercises every night 7 days a week and brought down for breakfast every morning. Within 8 weeks Jim was walking on his own again and able to use the toilet again without any catheter and his appetite had improved immensely. I could not believe my energizer bunny was back to himself with little to no side affects of the stroke he had. I kept Xena on to maintain his strength, independence, and care that no one could believe he would ever get back to. His weight was gaining again, health improved, and quality of life was back. They treated him like their grand father and knew that he was capable of much more than what the doctors had said. He began fall training and if something were to happen, he was able to get himself back up again (which this was very helpful and prevented many possible major falls and that he was not afraid to fall if fell.) The care was always great and could not have asked for better for they really were angels that came in at the right time and brought him back me.
Thank you, Brooke, Jody and Leanne, for all the care that given

Our mother, Elizabeth Wilcox, was a resident of Bayfield House Retirement
Lodge in Penetanguishene from November, 2021, to January, 2024.
As her family lived in Toronto and she needed more care than Bayfield House
could provide, on December 19, 2022, at the recommendation of the staff at
Bayfield House, we hired Brooke Buchanan from Xena Homecare to help take care of our mother twice a day.
In the morning Brooke would help our mother get dressed and ready for the day, as well as provide showers twice a week, help with toileting and provide companionship.
When government subsidized home care was made available to our mother in
the evenings in the summer of 2023, Brooke continued to care for her each
morning. We could count on Brooke to take good care of our mother and to keep us updated on her condition. Brooke also bought any toiletries or other supplies that our mother needed.
When her glasses needed fixing or she needed to be taken to her doctors'
appointments, we could always phone Brooke and she would be happy to take
care of these needs. When our mother was admitted to Long Term Care in Mississauga on January 2, 2024, Brooke packed enough of her belongings to last her for a week and made
sure she was safely put into the ambulance for the trip down. Brooke wrote a letter to send with our mother stating who our mother was and listing all of her likes and dislikes. This helped the staff at her new long term care facility get acquainted with our mother and take better care of her. The letter is still posted in our mother's new room. Brooke phoned that night to make sure that our mother arrived safely and was settling into her new home.
We would highly recommend Brooke to care for your family member.

I am an RN and my husband is an MD.
We were caring for our good friend(Knox) who also was an MD. As he worsened we realized we needed more care than we could provide. We came across Brooke and her services and I think were here first clients. We had her come into our friends home twice a day or more if needed We were able to provide the social and emotional support along with Brook. With my 50 years of nursing experience I have met many young nurses, Brooke is one of a kind. Her knowledge, her skills ,her professionalism were absolutely outstanding. Our friend was very hesitant at first about a young woman showering him etc, but absolutely loved Brooke. He many times confided in her, she was a great support to us the friends and family and because of her we were able to manage him at home until 3 days prior to his passing.
I can’t say enough good things about her and we will be forever grateful to her.
Recently, we lost our beloved daughter Kathy . During Kathy’s final days, Brooke and Jody not only provided top quality palliative care and emotional support to Kathy ; but , they also understood and supported the emotional pain of our whole family .
Brooke and Jody far exceeded our expectations as it was apparent they were not just doing their job ; but , doing it professionally with a heart . They focused on Kathy’s individual needs and went above and beyond .
Our family will always have theses two remarkable ladies in our hearts . Thank you so much for providing this area with such quality home care .

Our experience in the last year with Xena home care services for my mother, has been fantastic. Nothing short of wonderful. My mother is 70 and surviving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Brooke the coordinator is kind and understanding, and empathetic. My mothers caregiver Jody has been such a blessing to our family. Her positivity, patience, and encouraging attitude is a ray of sunshine in each day she spends with our mother. Jody has gone above and beyond on a moments notice (myself and my brother live several hours away) and it has given us and our mother SUCH comfort.
I was desperate to find outright care for my 95 year old uncle. Due to my own illness and lack of medical experience, I certainly was not qualified. My friend found Xena HomeCare website and arranged the immediate support that he needed. Sadly he passed away shortly after. Jody made sure he was comfortable and surrounded by love. We are blessed with his compassionate service.
Thank you from the Robitaille family for the service that Brooke Buchanan and Leanne Lesperence provided to our mother Lorraine Robitaille while she was living at Georgian Bay Lodge.
We recommend Brook for the excellent good quality of care that she provided.

We were so grateful to have 24 hour round the clock care provided by Brooke,Francesca and Jody. These ladies gave exceptional care to my mother in law for three weeks in her own home.
It gave us great comfort in knowing the PSWs were focused on her individual needs and making sure she was comfortable.
They showed care and compassion to her and also to the family. You can truly see they enjoy providing quality care to their clients and families.
Thank you and forever grateful.

Brooke was my husbands caregiver and my helper until my his passing (25-07-22 to 15-08-23) Brooke combines true professionalism with her tender living care. Floyd flourished under her tutelary in his quest to be the best that he could be. With her gentle persuasion, he was achieving that even at his advanced age and previous barriors of his domino left side and stroke. After we completed his bath time I felt completely at ease for the remaining two hours, leaving him on her care as I ran errands or attended appointments. She seemed to work her magic in encouraging him on his recovery journey, with many quips and smiles she was not only Floyds trusted care provider, but we felt she was a true caring and loving friend to us both.

Over the last several months we had the heartbreaking experience of caring for Theresa. Our beloved mother and sister -in- law, as she was going through the end stages of her journey with an uncurable brain tumor. Realizing that we couldn't go through this journey alone, we had the very good fortune to find XenahomeCare, and specifically Jody.
For several months, Jody came to our home 7 days a week without fail. Every morning, not only giving the best care and compassion to Theresa, but offering compassionate support to us as a family that we needed so much at this time. Jody became much more than a caregiver and became part of our extended family, all working together to make Theresa end of life journey as comfortable as it can be. We will be forever grateful to Jody and the whole Xena team.

We hired Xena Home Care to take care of my 90 year old father who was unable to exercise his own catheter care - we hired a psw from this service on the recommendation of a nurse at the hospital. The service was exceptional. My dad had dementia and we made the request that the service provider be consistent if possible- they were able to accommodate and sent us an angel called Jodi. She cared for my dad nightly- getting him ready for bed. It was the sweetest thing to see as Dad held her hand as she readied to tuck him in. Jodi worked with Dad for six months and even did 2 weeks for us at the hospital when we couldn’t get there. She would pick up a Tims coffee for him, feed him dinner and just sit with him and chat to keep his dementia at baseline- as being in hospitals is terrible for older people.
This service was more than we expected it was like having a third daughter for my dad - they cared for him and were patient and understanding when he had bad days.
I am so grateful for this agency. They made Dad’s last six months so much easier and dignified.
Thank you Jodi and Brooke.
